A story about a man and his sword... well it's a little more complicated than that! Richard Cypher is a simple woodsman, with an old friend called Zedd, who saves a girl (Kahlan) and finds out more about himself than he bargained for.
With his father dead, he sets out on a perilous journey to an unfamiliar land in search of answers and to save the world.
7 books so far, another on the way and I believe there are more to come. These are bewitching books set in a world where magic is threatened and people are torn apart by war. However, despite the gruesomeness of the fighting (which is plentiful), it is a very beguiling storyline and you find yourself routing for Kahlan and Richard as their love deals with many ups and downs.
Each book in the series is based on a different Wizard's Rule, and they act like morals. The worst circumstances can come from the best intentions, passions rule reason, and people are stupid.... a bit like Aesop, perhaps! But definitely worth the read, not preachy at all -- and definitely good if you like your books with a little more bloodshed in them. Myself, I can deal with the bloodshed, because behind it all lies a love story.
